The Machine

By Susan Ferrara

Directed by Gus Schulenburg

The Machine is a play with music and sound about a lower-middle-class, Midwestern family of factory workers. Covered in dirt, the men are sent to the factory to build. If they grind the gears, if the machine is broken, they are pulled from the job and sent to an unnamed, unknown, ill-defined battle field. From this place, the dead are delivered in crisp, black, body bags. The neighbors remember when things were better, so they fight the machine. Sticking their hands into the gears. Every yard is filled with the graves of those who have been lost. What more can they do to stop the deliveries?
